The Irish and the Weather

You would imagine for a country so obsessed with the weather that we would have produced at least one world beating, beautifully designed weather app that does the core features right. Alas, it appears we would rather spend our time giving out about the weather than actually trying to soften the blow of bad weather by creating a beautiful container to display this bad news.

Anyways, here are some of my favourite current weather apps – my number one being ‘Haze’ which is just pure and brilliant. Does the core stuff right; rain, wind, sun.

Weather+

Very busy, lots going on – but full of detail

Weather Neue

Plain, simple, informative

Solar – a bit too bare

Coming from a farm, there is not enough info available to stop a farmer from ringing the ‘Weather Dial’ service.

Sun – Web App

Beautiful, HTML5 interaction but lacking in detail for the farmer but fine for the everyday punter.

The UX Person in me just loves this app

The Met.ie

Redesigned mobile focused website.

Functional, loads of detail and has nearly everything a farmer could want weather-wise. This is why we have linked it on the newly redesigned iFarm service.Alas it doesn’t have that critical design edge to be a world beater.

Honourable Mentions

The forecast app from http://forecast.io is sweet which is not surprising since it is from the same guys that gave us http://darkskyapp.com/

Weather 2x is also a very functional well designed weather experience.

  1. Unbelievable the same applies for marine weather – which has massive implications for safety and environmental issues. We get all our weather from the sea yet we rely on Norwegian and US sites for all our information.
